Approximately 8% of Americans report having at least one major depressive episode in their lifetime. It is not unusual to experience several depressive episodes or feel that it is a chronic state of being. The prevalence of adults with a major depressive episode is higher for young adults and members of marginalized groups.

Almost 43% of persons with depressive symptoms report difficulties at work, home, and social activities. Further, nearly half of those with depression also deal with anxiety. This up and down cycle is exhausting.

When did depression start and how long have you been feeling this way? Is it seasonal, tied to a period of intense anxiety, life transition (new baby, job, graduation), anniversary of a death, or is there disconnection in a relationship?

Depression is a message from our bodies and psyche that we need to slow down for a moment. Interestingly, there can be great insight gained when we quiet and listen to the impact that the pace of our life and the quality of our relationships are having on us.

Depression is like … when you don’t want cheese anymore. Even though it’s cheese. -Jenny Lawson
