Premarital Counseling

Congratulations on your decision to enter into a life-long commitment with another human being! Getting married is a big step even if you have been living together or in a relationship for a long time. Sometimes the very reasons that you decided to get married get sidelined due to the excitement and stress of planning a wedding.

The couples I work with primarily report coming to premarital counseling for 3 reasons (aside from their pastor or parents think it is a good idea):

1)  They want to better understand their partner.

2)  They want to make sure they are asking each other the right questions.

3)  They want to learn better conflict resolution skills for the future.

Good reasons for sure! Premarital counseling has been found to increase the chances of satisfaction and success for couples in the early stages of marriage. In many ways, premarital counseling is the best gift that you can give to your future spouse. It supports you as a couple in keeping your relationship in the forefront, provides a safe space for dealing with wedding stress, and brings a deeper level of intimacy and understanding that will carry you happily into the future.

Call or email me to set up an informational phone conversation, a free 30-minute meeting in person to see if I am a good fit for the two of you, or to schedule an appointment.

Same-Sex Couples:  Deciding to get married can hold unique challenges for our community. Telling others that you are getting married can feel like coming-out all over again.  Maybe you are planning a small private wedding because you want to avoid going public. In your heart, have you dreamed of a big deal traditional wedding? Did you invite Aunt Donna? Does she even know you’re gay?

This long overdue right to marry can bring back that old nemesis “homophobia” for you and/or your family. If this is the case, we can make space to process these issues. I want you to have the wedding and marriage that is best for the two of you…on your terms.
